The server has a random challenge mode in the form of "The Apocalypse" which occurs during every thunderstorm.
HELP WANTED: This article is incomplete and out of date.
During The Apocalypse, Apocalyptic Zombies both normal and specialized zombies are spawned following every lightning strike.
When lightning strikes if a player has not previously used a Tome of The Undead or is not currently wearing Peaceful Warrior Armor, Apocalyptic Zombies (excluding specialized zombies) will have "targeted spawns" aimed at the specific player.
The main spawn to be concerned about here is the bed spawn. This spawn will create a number of zombies at a player's bed.
Fun Fact: In the original Skelril Apocalypse this was the only zombie spawn point. The apocalypse was originally created to increase the challenges players face in Minecraft, even after they have created a base. Back in the old days, dozens of zombies would be spawned at player's beds, and it wasn't uncommon to see houses that looked through their windows like "Explosive Cans of Zombies."
A secondary targeted spawn will occur at player's current location featuring a handful of zombies.
The majority of zombies these days appear where the lightning bolt struck. This makes the apocalypse far less intense in comparison to earlier versions, and does allow players to bunker up in their homes to some extent, or optionally engage with a larger swarm.
If players want the most serious challenge possible, The Graveyard is definitely the place to go featuring the largest swarms of zombies and a near constant flow of foes.
Players that die and respawn during The Apocalypse will go to their bed as normal. As a player's bed may otherwise be surrounded or covered with zombies given the bed spawns nearby zombies will be cleared on respawn. Also in the interest of fairness, players spawn with a few seconds of various buffs to help them fight through any zombies that may remain nearby until they can get to more suitable equipment.
At the end of the storm, a message "Rawwwgggggghhhhhhhhhh......" will appear in chat, and all apocalypse spawned zombies outside of The Graveyard will despawn.
Inside of The Graveyard, apocalypse zombie counts will be greatly reduced. No further zombie spawns will occur from lightning strikes even for zombies like the Thor Zombie or Zapper Zombie.
In addition to the standard apocalyptic zombie, the apocalypse has a number of specialized zombies.
The Chucker Zombie throws nearby zombies forward towards players. While normally little more than a minor inconvience, if Thor Zombies or Zapper Zombies are thrown the situation can quickly become quite dangerous.
If a sticky zombie touches a player, the player will be given slowness III for fifteen seconds.
If a thor zombie touches a player, the player will be thrown back, and lightning will strike where they land.
Additionally, when a thor zombie dies it triggers an explosion equivalent in strength to a block of TNT exploding.
The Zapper Zombie takes two forms, a baby zombie and a full sized zombie.
If a baby zapper zombie touches a player, it will sucide spawning a lightning bolt where it died.
If a full sized zapper zombie touches a player, it will suicide spawning three lightning bolts where it died.
Mini-bosses spawn during the apocalypse when a high concentration of zombies are targeting the same player.
The Merciless Zombie is a rarer mini-boss that's true to its name. The Merciless Zombie has several mechanics.
Pro Tip: To effectively defeat Mericless Zombies players must keep nearby zombies from reaching the Merciless Zombie, attack with melee, and keep moving to dodge the lightning strikes.
The Zombie Executioner is the most common mini-boss that spawns. The Zombie Executioner is relatively harmless when by itself, but if around other apocalypse zombies it quickly becomes an indestructible machine of death.
Pro Tip: To effeciently kill Zombie Executioner's and reduce the chances of death it's very important to keep the executioner isolated.
Players that do not wish to partake in The Apocalypse are called noobs () have a couple of options:
Note: Players will take severe damage if attacking hostile mobs while wearing Peaceful Warrior Armor.
